چکیده

Concept models, or ‘ontologies’ represented in description logics are becoming central to many efforts in re-usable medical terminologies. Developers of any ontology must make a series of choices concerning how concepts are represented. These choices are made more difficult by the limitations of the logical formalisms in which ontologies are represented and the complexity of the pragmatics of medical usage, as well as by the sheer size and scope of medicine. Principles for ontology structure to guide developers are still poorly. This paper articulates the principles arrived at from the experience of the GALEN programme and illustrates them with an overview of the its ontology, the GALEN Common Reference Model. The complete Common Reference Model and associated material is available from the OpenGALEN foundation at www.OpenGALEN.org Citation: Appeared at IMIA WG6 Workshop: Terminology and Natural Language in Medicine. Phoenix Arixona, Nov 1999. Two appear as a two part paper: Rector, AL and Rogers JE (2002) Ontological issues in GALEN: Part I Principles and Part II High Level Schemata in Methods of Information in Medicine.

Ontological Issues in using a Description Logic to Represent Medical Concepts: Part II - The GALEN High Level Schemas

A previous paper [1] described the principles behind the development of the GALEN ontology and its high level schema. This paper describes the high level schemas themselves for the top level, anatomy and disease, and illustrates how those principles have been worked out in practice. The complete Common Reference Model and associated material is available from OpenGALEN at www.opengalen.org

The Rrelationship between Philosophy and Medicine in The Works of Imam Fakhr Razi: A Distinct Model from Galen and Avicenna

The long-standing interaction of philosophy and medicine has assumed to be as follows: great physicians have been also philosophers, so there is a relationship between medicine and philosophy. In this paper, based on philosophical modeling, essentials of interaction for medicine and philosophy are presented. First, brief descriptions of two models of medicine-philosophy interaction are presente...

Untangling Taxonomies and Relationships:

The GALEN prALogramme has been developing medical ontologies collaboratively for nearly a decade. The ontologies are large and formulated in a specialised description logic, GRAIL. The programme is a broad collaboration of over a dozen groups, most with no prior experience of developing formal ontologies. The programme has developed a methodology for loosely coupled development using layers of ...

The GRAIL concept modelling language for medical terminology

The GALEN representation and integration language (GRAIL) has been developed to support effective clinical user interfaces and extensible re-usable models of medical terminology. It has been used successfully to develop the prototype GALEN common reference (CORE) model for medical terminology and for a series of projects in clinical user interfaces within the GALEN and PEN&PAD projects. GRAIL i...
